about

RIYL: Dirty Three, Tortoise, Perfect Black Swan, Black Oak Hymnal, Jandek

Accompanied by bassist/percussionist Dixon Hodges, a 2005 instrumental project from Black Oak Hymnal’s Grafton Silos finally sees the light of day. Unapologetically lo-fi with a warts ‘n’ all approach, The Burnt Over District boasts seven pieces over 27 minutes, the duo filling this mini album with raw, yet cinematic tunes evoking desert landscapes, vast swathes of wilderness and unseemly goings on in the dark corners where most would fear to tread. Silos is greatly skilled at building atmospheres in his music, simply by respecting the space within his compositions and firmly grasping the dynamics available from such minimal arrangements. This said, there are a couple of jaunty themes present here; opener Edmonton and Gunfight In Borrego illustrate there is more to Orchard Valley Killers’ music than darkness and menace.
-David Morrison, Nanaimo, BC

You'd put this on if you and your friends were leaving around dusk to look for aliens or ghosts and instead spent most of the night driving around talking about the possibility of either while drinking gallons of blue raspberry slushies. Very atmospheric and a ton of fun to listen to!

There they crafted their sound that embraced sci-fi, westerns, and horror along with Southern California breezes, traffic, and smog. ... more
